We all know that meditation brings peace of mind and calms us down. I regularly practice medication. I know that it has positive effect on relaxing the body and it drastically reduces stress. Our body gets relaxed in meditation when we focus the mind on a particular thought, image or repetitive action. Our mind begins to loosen up and our body becomes relaxed.

We can wonder how all these happen. Actually there is a lot of chemical fusion in our brain during meditation which leads to total relaxation of body and indeed the mind. Meditation produces a fusion between the two hemispheres of brain. There are 2 hemispheres in our brain, the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere. The function of left hemisphere is thought to be dominant as it controls the logical and rational thought process. The right hemisphere deals with creativity, emotion, and imagination. (Probably my right part is quite active as I love creativity!!). The increased cohesion between the two disparate halves during meditation is evident from the following neurological reaction. There is a sudden leap in the emission of the alpha wave associated with the receptive state of the brain. The scientists call this meditative step more effective than sleep.

The body relaxes in this alpha state (the meditative state) because the parasympathetic nervous system predominates. It conserves and stores energy causing blood pressure and heart rate to slow down. The body as a result starts to respond in a different way than its preliminary response to shock situations like the “fight or flight” situation. Adrenaline secretion is cut down. As a result the brain functions in a better way and circulation of limbs is improved and cerebral blood flow is increased. The scientists find that during meditation the person transcends the state of being shocked. So meditation is a nice way to chill out!!
